Back To Mine 1

29 January 2024

This "mix" (it's not a mix) was part of the planned contributions to follow on from the seasonal mix series that I was a part of on Balearic Social. That series originated from a fairly off the cuff comment I posted on my Facebook, if you look back through previous posts, you'll find the background to that.

Towards the end of that series, I had suggested a follow up series to emulate the wonderful Back To Mine series that ran through the DMC label from the late 90's to late 00's and featured some excellent acts like Groove Armada, Faithless, Underworld and Carl Cox, to name but a few. That original series was about (as far as I can remember) music that you'd hear if you went "back to theirs", after your night out clubbing etc, but it was also often used as a vehicle to plug their own musical projects. The idea to do a Back To Mine type thing was always in the back of my mind and it seemed like a good time to try take that forward.

The original cast from the seasonal series were mostly involved, but this one started growing arms and legs in a direction that didn't work for me. To my mind, the whole idea was that it was a platform to express a wider flavour of music that you love, perhaps introduce listeners to things they might not otherwise hear, or remember things you'd forgotten about, with a clear emphasis on not being focussed on dj-ing or mixing, or pulling the most expensive records out of your collection, and it felt like as more people got on board, that was the way contributions went, and the original concept was devalued. That's just my opinion of course, people can (and did) do what they want.... but if I wanted to listen to bog standard dj mixes, the latest releases off Juno's chart, I could just go to their mixcloud and pick anything randomly and it wouldn't sound much different to what some were sharing as Back To Mine.

So, for my own part (and I've got more Back To Mine style selections to come), there's no focus on mixing, it's not about trying to be obscure, or showing off vinyl rarities on my shelves. It's just music that I love, from over a long time, different points of life with different meaning and stories behind them. Like the opening track, was a song I used on a DVD I made for my Mum where I compiled lots of photos that meant something to her and backed them up with a combination of music she loved and music I picked. Or, the Darondo track which I first heard through the amazing scene in Breaking Bad where Walter White blew up the loudmouth bankers car in the petrol station, and Walter walks away feeling very proud and bad ass about himself. There's something behind each of them for me, and there's little point in writing it all out here seeing how there's very little interest in what I'm doing here. It's taking a lot of effort just bringing some order to the blog as it is, and that's my main focus for here just now.

So, onto the music. I think that as most of these tracks aren't too difficult to track down if you want them for yourself. Ebay will probably be the cheap option, but I'll link to the Discogs sources from where I have them on my own shelves and if you decide to hunt via ebay it might make it easier.

** Oh, I almost forgot to add a little about the cover image! Behind where I took the photo for the cover (by around a mile) is where I currently live. So, literally I have my back to mine. Now.... music.....
