To Rise & Fall (28)

28 June 2024

This mix was  #28 in the 'Year of Music' series, it's now got a new title and cover image. I went with the title 'To Rise & Fall' because there's an elemental / water theme unintentionally running through parts of the mix, but when I thought about it I like the simile of the ocean rising and falling through tidal movements and the similarities in many ways to life itself. Ups and downs, movement that happens (often) without much control.

If you want to know what the 'Year in Music' I mentioned was about, then you can find an little individual post on that [HERE]. If you like your music via Soundcloud, then there's a link for you [HERE], though I might not always keep that account active due to costs. We'll see.

Flashback (29)

22 June 2024

Things take a wild turn from the previous post to this one, from experimental electronica and ambient, into banging techno. This mix was formerly titled '29' but is now 'Flashback' and it has a completely new cover too.

Let's address the new title first. Flashback is not only a nod to the classic Laurent Garnier track that I used in this mix, it also alludes to the fact that techno was a very big part of my musical tastes over the years, granted it's not been so much a part of my playlists in more recent times, but from the early 90's and for a good 20 years or so, it was a big part of what I listened to. Techno is quite a wide ranging genre, so as mentioned, artists and DJ's like Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig who moved between techno, detroit techno, house etc, to artists like The Prodigy or Daft Punk, all probably viewed a bit more commercially these days, and many names in between - Pullen, Cox, Landstrumm, Vogel, Bolland, Slam, Green Velvet... the list could go on and on. That's before you even debate whether music in the Scottish hardcore scene was techno or not, guys like Ultra-Sonic and labels like Club Scene, or the Euro scene with labels like Bonsai. As I said, the word techno covers a lot of ground, at least in my mind. So, yeah, a techno mix that felt like I was having a bit of a flashback to a harder and more intense sound than I'd been listening to, but all a part of trying to raise funds for charity during my 'Year of Music' series.

So, having thrown out some names in this post and putting the point over that I didn't just jump on Beatport (though for the sake of easiness most links below are to Beatport) and hit up the top 10 techno tracks, that I have some history of listening to and enjoying techno it's at this point I confess I had never done a proper techno mix, not in my own understanding of the word anyway. I've skirted around the edges with tech-house and electro that some might class as techno, but not quite for me. So, this was, I think, my first techno mix. Unplanned and done live, in one take, as all the mixes are. If there are mistakes or glitches, they remain in there. So, posted as it happened, but know that fun was had making it.

The cover as I mentioned is new, it's a combination of Ai and some my own bits and pieces, which I've enjoyed playing around with. Loosely linking into the title, with Flashback to how robots and artificial intelligence were perceived in years gone by.

As I always mention on the 'Year of Music' posts, you can find out what all the was about over [HERE] and if you prefer a Soundcloud player, you can find that [HERE], though I'm not sure if that link will always work, I'm struggling to make my mind up about the platform I want to use going forward, with cost playing a bigger part in my thinking than engagement, especially as that's decreased so much in recent years. It'll be what it'll be.

Growth & Decay (30)

20 June 2024

This was originally number 30 in the 'Year of Music' series from back in 2022. I've given it the title 'Growth & Decay' and although the photo I used for the original cover is the same, it's had a bit of an edit to work with the title a little better.

I went with the title 'Growth & Decay' for a couple of reasons, firstly some of the music ties in beautifully with that, listen and judge for yourself. Secondly, the photo was a macro photo I took in my garden a few years ago, I forget what the flower is, but the original image is showing the flower at that point where it's bloomed, it's done what it needs to do and it's beginning to degrade and decay.

I might have said this about other mixes I've posted recently (I listen to them before I repost them), but this is one of my favourite mixes from that year, it's got a nice flow to it, and of course, I bought the music for my own listening enjoyment, so of course I'm going to feel something towards it, but it also is one of the most played mixes of mine from recent years, so it must have struck a chord with other people too, which is always nice to think.

If you want to know what the 'Year of Music' was all about, then you can find out [HERE]. If you prefer your player to be of the Soundcloud variety, then you'll find that [HERE], though it might not always be live.

Shades 2 (31)

18 June 2024

Originally '31' in the 'Year of Music' series, now imaginatively titled 'Shades 2' and given an equally imaginative 'new' cover.

Okay, not very imaginative at all, but the musical content is mostly based around contemporary jazz, nu-jazz.... or call it what you will, which was similar for 'Shades (48)', so yeah, I manipulated the cover and stuck a 2 on the end of the title. There doesn't have to always be a deep and meaningful connection with the music and the cover does there?

If you want to know what the 'Year of Music' thing is about, then there's an explanation [HERE]. If you prefer a Soundcloud player, then you can find that [HERE], though my subscription to there might change in future and the link may well vanish.

Into The Ether (32)

16 June 2024

This one was number 32 in the 'Year of Music' series. It was posted a few day's after what would have been my Mum's Birthday, so the tracklist and feel of the mix reflects how things were feeling that week. The David Boulter track in particular, not just for some of the words within, but the track title too; I planted a Cherry Blossom tree for her where her ashes were scattered. Ironically, June 16th, the day I'm reposting is also a poignant day, for different reasons, but it's funny how these things are thrown up in life.

The new title I think reflects quite well the thoughts and feelings behind the selection. The definition of ether being "the clear sky; the upper regions of air beyond the clouds". The image is the same image used during the 'Year of Music' and is a photo taken from the banks of the Lac du Bourget at Aix les Bains in France. It's a beautiful part of the world where I had to have an emergency overnight stop because my bike was playing up during a tour in Europe in 2019. I hope to make it back one day, I was on my way to Grenoble and to take in the Combe Laval balcony roads, which I missed out on with bike troubles changing my plan. I love the light in the photo, but also the fact it's slightly out of focus, it all kind of ties in to me.

If you want to know more about the 'Year of Music' series, there's a little info on that [HERE]. If you prefer to use a Soundcloud player, then you'll find that [HERE] though the link might not always be live and you might need to just roll with the Hearthis player.

Living In Hues Of Blues (33)

Number 33 in the 'Year of Music' series is now named 'Living In Hues of Blues', and it's had a new cover made too.

The music in this drives the title and cover, with shades of blues music running throughout. It's a selection rather than a mix for this one, sharing a selection of music from my record shelves that I'd find hard to use in a more conventional mix.

As I always try and do, you'll find a linked up tracklist below. This time around I'll be relying mostly on Discogs links to the releases I own, but did around if you want something for yourself, you might find better deals on other versions of the same release, or via Ebay etc.

If you want to know more about these 'Year of Music' series of selections and mixes, there's an explanation [HERE]. If you prefer to use a Soundcloud player, then you'll find that [HERE], but that link may not always be active, given the cost of keeping these things running.

In Natures Hands (34)

13 June 2024

This mix turns back towards ambient and abstract sounds, with some spoken words coming from Jeff Bridges too. It was originally number 34 in the 'Year of Music' series but I've gone with 'In Natures Hands' for the new name.

There's a few reasons why I came to this title. Firstly, the music to me feels organic and natural, I used a field recording from Melissa Pons as the opener to emphasise that feeling of nature. Secondly, I leaned into the cover image that I used originally, which is a photo I took locally and is the same image as above, but I've give it an edit to give it a trippier feel, if I can use that term. And thirdly, ultimately we are all in natures hands, none of us can escape that, and as I type this I'm in the midst of a flare up of aches and pains that have been feature of life for some time. It is what it is, but as that's how I'm feeling it seemed pertinent and timely and that it connects into this mix / title / feeling.

A few of these releases were supporting a variety of charities, so check the links if you want to pick things up and support the labels and artists in their support of others.

As a side note, this is one of my favourite mixes I put together for this series, though it hardly had any plays, barely getting into double digits. I'm going to take a little break from posting and perhaps it'll get a little more attention from being left as the most recent post, but no big deal if not. I've got quite a lot on my plate so time needs spent on other things for the moment, but I'm sure I'll be back, speaking into the ether before too long, perhaps sooner than I think, but it'll be when it is.

If you want to know more about the 'Year of Music' series, then there's a little on that [HERE]. If you prefer to use a Soundcloud player, then you can find that [HERE] for the moment, it might not always be there as costs / benefits are entering my thoughts for when my subscription expires.

Back To The Disco (35)

11 June 2024

Number '35' in the 'Year if Music' series is now 'Back To The Disco' and it's had a completely new cover done too.

At the time of doing this mix, I hadn't put together a mix of edits for a couple of years, so I was a bit rusty. That's leads me to the new cover, which as you can see is old, unused and a little bit rusty disco equipment; a mirrorball, lighting and studio gear, all a little worse for wear.

The previous post I had up sharing this mix mentioned that I put this together (live & unplanned - as all these mixes have been) whilst having a few ciders on a Friday night, and really I just had a little fun with it. As mentioned, I was a little out of practice with this kind of thing, so one or two of the mixes / levels aren't the best, but I remember having fun doing it and that was more important to me given that the weekly mix thing had felt a bit of a chore by this point. So, all things considered, I posted it anyway, imperfections and all.

I always try and post a fully linked up tracklist to the mixes I share. I feel like it's the least I can do when I'm sharing music this way, thinking that it might lead to a sale or a new follower for the artists. With the edit based mixes, many will have been taken down, either by the person who edited the track, or because they've been forced to, so the tracklist is going to be very limited for mixes of this nature. If you dig around though, you might find them yourself if I haven't been able to, and you can always try and get a copy from the edit creator if you ask them nicely.

Still 36

The only mix from my 'Year of Music' series that will be retaining the name it started out with is this one. '36' is still called '36'. I've also used the same cover, though I've given it a couple of very minor tweaks, giving my own pseudonym some real estate on the cover which wasn't there originally.

When I started the series of mixes / selections, I always had it in the back of my mind that I'd throw in a label focus or artist focus. By that, I mean only include tracks from one label, or one artist. Considering the artist 36 has been one of my favourite ambient artists in recent years, it seemed obvious what I needed to do for this mix.

The artwork makes use of the actual album art that the tracks I used came from. I put the images into a random collage generator and then played around with some edits, and this is where I settled.

You can find 36 (aka Dennis Huddleston) at Twitter //  Bandcamp  //  Instagram

If you would like to know what was behind the 'Year of Music' series you can find an explanation [HERE]. If you prefer to use Soundcloud, well you'll find it [HERE] though it might not always be there.

What Happened To You? (37)

'37' from my 'Year of Music' series has become 'What Happened To You?' as well as receiving a fresh cover image.

Over the years, as my musical tastes expanded and I spent some time in the world of soul music, one of the things that often came to my thinking was wondering what happened to the singer / song writer. Where did the depths of lyrics come from? Was it personal experience? Was it observations from others around them? Was it tapping into the nature of humans and their psyche, and using it creatively? However it was arrived at and delivered, that's the reasoning for my title.

The cover image is a combination of experimenting with various, very descriptive prompts on AI artwork applications and then giving it an edit myself until I felt happier with it. I think it captures a person in a contemplative moment with an appropriate brooding and atmospheric scene around him.

It's worth mentioning again from time to time, as I repost / rename these mixes and selections that they were a part of a project to post a fresh mix or selection, every week during the course of 2022. The aim was to raise funds for a charity that has been close to my heart and you can find more about that via this link [HERE] which will take you to a standalone page on my blog. It wouldn't have been as fun or interesting if I just churned out 52+ mixes of house or ambient so I tried to vary the genres over the course of the year to keep it interesting for myself and for anyone who happened to listen, so sometimes it was more of a selection than a traditional DJ mix.

If you prefer to use Soundcloud over Hearthis, then there is a link to Soundcloud [HERE], though that link might not always be active, it depends how I feel about keeping the subscription costs going and swallowing all these costs over time.

Bon Voyage (38)

10 June 2024

Another selection as opposed to a mix, this was originally titled simply as '38', but now is called 'Bon Voyage'.

I struggled to come up with a title and image for this one, sometimes you hit a mental block and that was the case here. Anyway, I've got over that and gone with Bon Voyage. Why? Well, I'm not sure you could call this Yacht Rock, or AOR, or Disco, but it's got flavours of all of the above, so I'm leaning into the Yacht Rock aspect with the title and cover. Unfortunately the image isn't a photo of mine. A couple of Mojitos on the deck of a luxury yacht is most definitely appealing, this is actually an edit of an image I made using AI, which I honestly find mind blowing... if I didn't mention it I'd wager hardly anyone would be able to tell.

Behind Closed Doors (39)

Number 39 in the 'Year of Music' series is now titled 'Behind Closed Doors'. As well as a fresh name, the cover is completely new, it's an edited photo that was taken by me in London, a very rare visit to the big smoke, back in 2012.

The title leans into a line from the final track of the mix that resonated with me, and still does if truth be told; "behind closed doors my spirit wanes". I remembered the image I had on my hard drive of these two doors, number eleven & eleven and a half, I loved that.... most others would have said 11a and 11b, but to actually write "and a half"...  just perfect! Anyway, that final track, just to give some context to the lyrics, it was released during lockdown in 2020. I think I am right in saying that the artists and musicians did their parts individually and it was all pieced together, given we were all cooped up at home. Another very loose connection I have with this title is that a friend from quite a few years ago now had floated the idea of putting on an event with the same name, it never came to be as far as I'm aware, but I'm reminded of it none the less.

The Clouds of Anhedonia (40)

Anhedonia: a psychological condition characterised by inability to experience pleasure in normally pleasurable acts.

Most people will no doubt encounter this feeling to some extent, perhaps coupled with depression or anxiety. When I set about these weekly mixes and blog posts back in 2022 it was around about the time I put this mix together that I realised it wasn't going to go in the direction I had really hoped and the process started to feel a bit more of a chore and a little bit less exciting to face each week. In the grand scheme of things, that doesn't really matter, but I've recently been reading the book 'Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Dr Julie Smith' and there's a section on anhedonia in that, so I knew instantly I was going to make use of that when it came to this mix. I think it ties in beautifully. So, number 40 in the 'Year of Music' is now 'The Clouds of Anhedonia'.

If you want to know more about the 'Year of Music' then there's a post about that [HERE]. If you prefer to listen via Soundcloud, then you can find that [HERE], though the link might not always remain active.

Sunshine Vibes (41)

I feel like I'm making inroads here with my attempt to repopulate the blog with mixes and selections! This one was originally titled '41', and I'm sure you'll have guessed it's got a Reggae and Ska vibe to it, proper sunshine music. For this one I've given it a completely new cover, partly leaning on AI and partly making use of a couple of editing programmes that I enjoy playing around with.

I certainly don't proclaim to be an expert in the genre, but I love what I love and I share what I share. With this being part of my 'Year of Music' mixes and selections I was doing my best to keep things interesting for myself and for those who took the time to listen in.

I'm dedicating this one to my friend in Bishops Stortford, he knows who he is. I know he has a big love for Reggae and Ska, and he was in my thoughts when I put this one together. The sun will shine on you again my friend.

If you want to know a little more about my 'Year of Music' series, then you can find that over [HERE]. If you prefer a Soundcloud link, then you can find that [HERE] for now, if the link dies in the future, it's down to costs of maintaining these things.

I will link the tracklist up as best as I can. Most of these have come from compilations and I am pretty sure that will be the most cost effective way to own them yourself. Even though I'll put some links up, I think it best you dig around Discogs / Ebay etc for the best deals for yourself if you want to own the beauties on here.

The Pale Blue Dot (42)

Mix '42' from my 'Year of Music' has been renamed to 'The Pale Blue Dot'. Originally I had used the NASA image taken from Voyager 1, and the image that inspired Carl Sagan's book of the same name. I change this up whilst I give things a refresh around here and the image now used is one taken from Cassini, which was a project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency which was used to explore Saturn.

Aside from the opening monologue from Carl Sagan (which I timed the mix slightly wrong when I listen back), all of the music used came from compilations that were released by artists and labels as a means to raise funds for the people of Ukraine. This wasn't about supporting any aspect of that war, it was about supporting those impacted by it, people like you and I. So, if you listen to the monologue from Carl Sagan, it should be pretty clear why I opted to use that in the mix and for the title. Aside from that, I tried to use music that had a spaced out vibe to it, otherworldly if you like.

I'm not sure whether the music is still linked into the cause outlined above, but as always I'll link the tracklist up as best as I can and I'd encourage you to pick up any of the music you should like for your own collection.

If you want to know the back story to the 'Year of Music', you'll find that [HERE]. If you prefer a Soundcloud link, then that is over [HERE], though it may not be active long term due to costs of running these things.

Under The Dancing Lights (43)

7 June 2024

Previously known as '43', I've given this one the new name of 'Under The Dancing Lights' for no other reason than it's music to dance to and the cover resembles the lights you'd be dancing under. The cover has had a minor edit, but the truth is, although it resembles lights from an night out clubbing, it's actually lights that were in a cave at Chedder Gorge in Somerset, England.... shhh! Don't tell anyone.

If you want more information on the 'Year of Mixes' I put together, then you'll find that over [HERE]. If you prefer using Soundcloud, then you can find that [HERE], though I don't know how long I'll keep the necessary account running over there, it's an extra expense I could do without.

What Are We Doing? (44)

After a few days off from doing this, it's time to try and get back on with things, and jumping back into it with what was originally titled (overly) simply, '44'.

This one is definitely a selection rather than a mix and it takes in quite a few genres. At the time of this being posted the conflict in Ukraine had literally just started that week, so the music in this selection carries a message. Not just about that conflict, it could be any conflict really. The state of the world, the environment, the nature of political discourse, the mind numbing state of most (not all) content being shared on platforms like Tik Tok and Twitter (Elon can stick the rebranding up his X), the clickbait, the algorithmic manipulation leaning into hate, conflict and rage. I could go on. And on. And on. So, the rebranding of the title and the new cover image should be fairly clear.

If you want to know more about the whole 'Year of Music' thing, you can find out more [HERE]. If you want a Soundcloud link, then that's over [HERE], though for how long remains to be seen.

As usual, I'll link up the tracklist as best I can, a lot of this one will be directly to the releases I own that are on Discogs, though I'm sure you could find a good number of them at retailers like Juno, HMV and the bald, book selling, spaceman's site.
